Poetry Corner – Alaskan Woman

Alaskan Woman
by J. H. Williams

Alaskan woman pardon my stares but your power astounds me
Your rounded shoulders white and strong
Your arms lanky and taught
You strike hammer on chisel with the same veracity as clubbing King Salmon

All this and beauty too
Are you aware of your strength and beauty
Your eyes so alive
Your laugh as strong and as welcomed as a kind father’s embrace
Yet as soothing and feminine has a mother’s breast

Alaskan women pardon my stares but the sight of you tearing splinters from timber captivates me
Beauty and beast all in one as you hack and grind and mortise and chisel
Demanding the wood to submit

Alaskan woman pardon my stares but I can not take my eyes from you
I wish my daughter
As strong
As kind
As healthy

Alaskan woman pardon my stares but you are the essence of Alaska
Beauty and strength
Rock hard and giving
Determined and relentless
