Weekly School Update: Session #2
Session #2: June 12 – June 18
Bent #2 and Good Times
The second timber framing class started on June 12. Larry had so much fun in the first class that he returned! Larry was joined by woodcarver extraordinaire Phil and exceptional shop teacher, Joel.
Jon Gantenbein instructed the students in the squaring and layout of tie beams. These tie beams will connect the first and second bents. Ben #2 has a king post, two queen posts, plus a rafter system. The class is hoping that the second bent will be done on June 18.
The Quonset hut workshop has been a blessing on windy days. Barbara’s meals (prepared ahead in Fairbanks) have been excellent! Music often follows with the owners and several students playing acoustic music in the old lodge where afternoon meals are staged. The group has had many animal sightings: a herd of buffalo along the river, a band of Dall sheep on the mountain behind the lodge, a lone caribou calf near the highway and a pasty porcupine in camp.
Visitors have stopped by; Annie and Michael Hopper proudly show off the workshop, the completed bent, and the model of the finished timber frame. Annie says that there are still spaces for students in later classes. The fourth of July course promises to be an exciting one!
