Parking & Loading Zone
Parking is located adjacent to the lodge with a short, direct path to the main entry
- Guests may pull up to the front entrance for loading and unloading
- Ramp into main entry way, path is firm and slip resistant and at least 36 inches wide
- The main entrance provides access to the ground floor, including Room 2 (ADA-friendly)
- The parking area is a maintained gravel surface, typical of rural Alaska properties
During winter months, snow removal is regularly performed to maintain access; however, surface conditions may vary depending on weather.
Due to the lodge’s remote location, there are no formally designated ADA-marked parking spaces or painted access aisles. The parking area is a gravel surface and is not paved. Parking spaces are not striped or specifically sized for accessible vehicles.

While we strive to maintain safe and convenient access for all guests, the lodge’s setting in a rural Alaskan environment means that some standard urban accessibility features are not feasible.
Guests with accessibility needs are encouraged to contact us in advance so we can assist with arrival planning and provide personalized support where possible.
Exterior Routes
The Lodge at Black Rapids provides exterior access from the parking area to the main lodge entrance via a direct and unobstructed path. While the lodge is located in a remote, natural setting, we make reasonable efforts to maintain safe and usable access for guests.
A direct route from the parking area to the main entrance is available with minimal distance.
Exterior walkways and entry areas are kept clear of unnecessary obstacles and protruding objects to support safe navigation.
The entrance area is well-defined and visible, supporting guests with low vision.
Staff are available to assist with luggage handling and arrival support upon request

Due to the lodge’s rural Alaskan setting, exterior routes consist of natural and compacted surfaces rather than fully paved walkways; however, care is taken to keep pathways as level and navigable as possible within the natural environment.

Building Entrances & Lobby
The building entrance has a ramp and 32 inches clear opening. The lobby has open access to an ADA-accessible restroom, dining area, and an accessible guest room (Room 2).
Building entrance does not include automatic door openers; the entrance threshold may include a slight lip or transition, does not have an elevator, and flooring may include area rugs or transitions between materials typical of a rustic lodge setting.
Interior Routes
The main floor provides direct access from the entrance to common areas, including the dining room, lounge space, and Room 2 (ADA-friendly).
Hallways and doorways on the main floor are standard width and allow for general accessibility, though not formally measured to ADA specifications.
The lodge layout supports step-free access throughout the main floor, aside from minor transitions between flooring materials.
We do not have an elevator leading to other floor levels.
Public/Common Use Restrooms
The restroom is located on the main floor with step-free access from the lodge entrance and common areas.
Entry to the restroom provides a clear and accessible doorway.
The restroom includes adequate interior space to allow for wheelchair turning and maneuverability.
Grab bars (handrails) are installed near the toilet for added support and stability.
The sink is positioned at an accessible height, allowing for ease of use.
Fixtures and layout are arranged to provide functional access for guests with mobility needs.
There is no automatic door, no tactile or braille signage elements, and does not include emergency call buttons or alert systems.
Interior Signs
Guest room signs are mounted on the latch side of the door and are made of nonreflective materials with numbers that contrast with the background.
We do not have braille signage.
The dining area is located on the main floor with step-free access from the lodge entrance.
Interior pathways within the dining space are generally open and allow for ease of movement between tables.
Dining Area
Seating is arranged in a flexible, family-style format, allowing staff to assist with spacing or seating needs when possible.
Tables and seating can be adjusted or repositioned to help accommodate mobility devices.
Staff are available to assist with seating, service, and guest needs upon request.
Dining tables and seating are not specifically designed to meet ADA height or clearance standards.
There are no designated wheelchair-specific seating stations or fixed accessible tables.
The dining space is not formally measured for ADA turning radius requirements, though it is generally open.
There is no counter-service or tray-slide system; meals are served family-style at the table.
There are no tactile or braille menu formats available as we do not have menus.
Lighting levels may vary depending on time of day and ambiance settings.
The dining area is well-lit and clearly defined, supporting visibility and navigation.

- Open floor space within the bathroom to allow for easier movement and maneuverability
- Accessible layout designed to support guests with mobility needs
- Grab bars (handrails) installed for additional support
- Does not include an emergency call system or alert device
- There are no visual or audible alert systems
- Does not include an adjustable-height bed or specialized medical equipment
- There are no tactile or braille signage features within the room

The Lodge at Black Rapids is committed to making our website accessible to people with disabilities.
We have designed our website to be accessible for impaired users to see, navigate, interact and understand the content provided as per the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 Level AA (WCAG 2.0 AA).
We have tested the functionality of this website with the Google Chrome Accessibility Audit tool. We have also manually tested keyboard-only functionality so that people who use screen readers or can't use a mouse are able to navigate through the website pages efficiently.
